P.R.O.U.D.

I rarely want to talk about the Company I'm currently serving. At least not on Facebook and definitely not in my blog.

It's not that I don't have any stories to share about the Company.. oh trust me, I could write a whole book! But I just feel that it's unethical. Most of the time, on Facebook at least, I see friends' status "complaining" about their Company or "lamenting" about banyak kerja etc.

(And although you don't spell out the Company that you work for, (some of) your friends on Facebook tahu..)

Personally, I feel it's unfair to "talk bad" about the Company that pays your salary. I don't believe in "biting the hands that feed you". I think, before you write any comments about your Company, ask yourself if you have done enough for the Company that you are serving.

Are you getting the pay that you truly deserve? Or are you grossly overpaid? I see my friends being very "active" on Facebook during office hours. Now you think the Company is paying you to go on Facebook and poke and like every picture you see? And then, after poking and liking every picture on Facebook, you have the cheek to tell your Facebook community that you're so bogged down with work that you hardly have time to breathe? Oh boy, that's a laugh.

Well anyway, this post is not about Facebook. And it's neither about how we often forget what the Company has done for us, as opposed to what we have done for the Company.

Today's posting is about the Company that I'm serving. Yes, for once, I am gonna talk about the Company that is paying my salary.
We're all guilty of this, once in a while kan..

Anywaaaaayyyyy... we are having our scholarship assessment now. This is the time, where we would choose outstanding students in Sudan and give them scholarships to study in Malaysia.

I attended the Corporate Briefing yesterday and even saw a video clip of the university that they will be studying at (should they get selected) in Malaysia. And frankly, I felt so proud to be working for this Company.

We have Offices around the world, there are over 500 Malaysians who are currently posted abroad, people in Sudan think we're awesome. And we are! We were formed merely 39 years ago.. but already, we've established a name (and reputation) amongst the circle in the industry.

I mean, talk to anyone in the industry and you'd be amazed how many people have heard of us. Every time someone asked me about where I work and then I tell them, the question stops there. I don't even have to explain what we do. EVERYONE knows what we do.. (well, follow-up question will be about what I do in the Company lah.. but the fact is, I don't have to explain about the Company).

"Company kita ni hebat sebenarnya kan," I told Ezlin as we were walking home yesterday from the office. And really, I meant it. I mean, the Company isn't perfect and I don't always agree with its systems and policies... but it's still a good Company, regardless.

I am, especially proud of its mission "to contribute to the people and the well-being of the nation wherever it operates". Selecting these Sudanese students and giving them the opportunity to study in Malaysia is a good thing. Yes, we can't guarantee that all those who have been selected will go back and serve their Country.. but hey, at least one or two will come back and give a hand in the development of their nation.

I remember how I went to see my former editor, Datuk Ahmad (Talib) and told him of my intentions to leave NST. I want him to be my referee in my resume, I told him. He looked me in the eye and told me this: "I've seen you grow so much in NST.. and I know you can grow some more. But this Company (the one that I was applying to) is good. Heck, it is the best Company in Malaysia and amongst the best in the world. So go for it. Work hard and make me proud."

(Well, I can't remember his exact words, but it was something like that lah. How I've grown from a rookie journo to a journo who can do reporting on almost anything - from crime to court to politics and even entertainment. Also about how I can continue learning and experience new things when I join this new Company.)

Oh dear. I am rambling kan...

But itu lah. The Company that I am working for, isn't too bad. Of course, occasionally I come across people who make me wonder how they can get there in the first place... but I've also met so many admirable men and women - people who work diligently for the Company. People who dare to make unpopular decisions as long as it benefit the Company. Smart ones who really knew all the technical stuff in the business.

I don't know if I will retire with the Company.. because my goals in life have changed over the years. I probably will want to start teaching and take it a little slow in life. (The Company is in a dynamic industry.. and slackers like me will only drag the Company down..)

But for as long as I'm serving the Company, I pledge that I will give my best. Contribute in any way I can, even if my contributions don't mean much.

Speaking of which, I just found out that another Company is interested in my staff. Makes me proud though.. because this only means that I have trained her well. She has carried herself well and got recognized by other companies.

I am not gonna stop her (as much as Datuk Ahmad didn't stop me from leaving).. but if she does go, I will definitely miss her. Oh boy.. looks like I have to talk to her soon.

Oh. And another guy whom I interviewed (to join the Company) about 2 years ago, is now with an important Division. He is currently working closely with our President's Office. It's humbling to see how much he's achieved in just 2 years..

When I first interviewed him, I knew he had the potential. He was just a bit quiet. But once you probe him, he could talk non-stop.. hehe.. especially if it's about the thing that he's passionate about, which is Finance.

I remember him Whatsapping me to tell about his first major presentation. It was such a proud moment for me. I know he's probably not the best speaker.. but I am proud of his achievement, nonetheless. We all start with being not-so-good speakers anyway (I have encountered people who told me that I was such a boring speaker.. hahah), but what is important is to keep trying and continue efforts to improve ourselves kan.

So yes.. two of my staff who've made me proud. They are still in the 20s.. so there's still a long way to go. I do hope they stay in this Company for its people like these (with the right attitude and the willingness to learn) that will take the Company to greater heights.

Ok... I've blogged enough. Now it's time for work. I know I shouldn't be blogging during office hours (spent about 20 minutes writing this), but I must write while I still am all geared up.. :)

Happy Malaysia Day!
